Fullness of Joy
Eli liked to win.
He liked winning races at recess. He liked earning the highest score on his spelling tests. He liked when his team won at soccer and everyone cheered his name.
When he won, he felt happy. But the happy feeling never seemed to stay very long.
One afternoon, after school, Eli sat on the front steps of his house with his shoulders slumped. He had studied hard for his math test, but another student had earned a higher score. On the soccer field that day, his team had lost by one point.
“I just want to feel happy again,” he muttered.
Inside the house, his mother was reading her Bible. She looked up and said gently, “Eli, come sit with me.”
He climbed onto the couch beside her. She turned the pages toward him and read aloud:
“Psalm 16:11, ‘Thou wilt shew me the path of life
