In today’s intercessory prayer sermon, we’re exploring John 14:16–20 (KJV):
“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.”
Jesus reveals the divine mystery of the Holy Spirit — our eternal Comforter — who dwells within believers forever. Prayer is the foundation for receiving the Spirit. Through intercession, Jesus Himself prays that the Father sends us His Spirit, promising we will never be left comfortless.
The Holy Spirit is not merely a force but a divine Person — the Spirit of truth who leads, comforts, and empowers us to live in victory. His eternal presence within believers fulfills Christ’s promise that even though He no longer walks the earth in the flesh, He remains with us in Spirit. This indwelling presence is our assurance of resurrection life, the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead and remains in us.
The world cannot recognize the Spirit, for He dwells in the unseen. Yet for those who love Jesus, the Spirit is active, guiding us into all truth. The same Spirit that lingered in Elisha’s bones — bringing life to a dead man — now abides in every believer, testifying that God’s power transcends even death.
Christ did not leave us comfortless. On the day of Pentecost, He came to dwell among His people by His Spirit. The Trinity — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — became our living companion and power source. Through faith, we live in communion with the fullness of God.
**Lessons Learned:**
1. **Prayer unlocks the presence of the Holy Spirit.** Jesus taught that prayer is the means by which we receive the Comforter from the Father.
2. **The Holy Spirit abides forever.** His indwelling presence assures us that we are never alone.
3. **The Spirit brings resurrection life.** Just as Elisha’s bones carried life, the Spirit in us will raise us up to everlasting life.
4. **The Holy Spirit is a Person, not a force.** He comforts, guides, and teaches us truth.
5. **Christ’s promise is fulfilled in Pentecost.** The Spirit’s coming means Jesus remains with us forever.
6. **Faith opens our eyes to the unseen reality.** Though we may not see Him physically, the Spirit makes Christ’s presence tangible within and among us.
7. **We are never alone.** In every moment of despair or loneliness, the indwelling Spirit reminds us that God is with us and within us.
Even now, the same Spirit is moving across His people, strengthening hearts, restoring faith, and preparing the Church for what is to come. Let us walk daily in awareness of His presence, allowing Him to lead us into all truth and manifest heaven’s power in our lives.
