Isaiah 43:2 – “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.” (KJV)
Historical and Exegetical Context
Isaiah, one of the major prophets in the Old Testament, delivered this message of hope and assurance to the Israelites during a period of exile. Written around the 8th century B.C., Isaiah 43 is part of a section where God reassures Israel of His everlasting covenant. The nation of Israel had been through many trials—wars, captivity, and displacement—but through it all, God promised His presence. This verse is a reminder that even through life’s most overwhelming challenges, God is present, protecting and guiding His people. The imagery of water and fire symbolizes both external and internal trials, and God promises that these forces will not destroy His people.
Hebrew Word Insight
- “Passest” (Hebrew:
abar): This word means to “cross over” or “pass through,” representing life’s difficult journeys and transitions. - “Waters” (Hebrew:
mayim): Symbolic of chaotic forces, waters often represent overwhelming challenges. - “Overflow” (Hebrew:
shataph): It means to “sweep away” or “overwhelm.” God’s promise is that His people will not be overwhelmed, even when circumstances seem impossible.
Reflection
Our lives demand many decisions to be made, and with each passing one, our lives are shaped by the choices we make. This reality can sometimes paralyze us in the present moment, leaving us afraid to move in any direction due to the fear of its outcome. We become stagnant, stuck in a moment, unable to find our way out. As a result, promises are lost, destinies are destroyed, and lives full of potential end up wasted.
This is the life we are destined for if we choose the “shallow” waters of frail security instead of taking a deep dive into a world where all things are possible for those who simply believe. God reminds us in His word that when we take a brave step forward, He steps with us. He goes before us and is our rear guard when we choose to place our decisions in His hands. Today, let us be brave and resolute in our faith, trusting His word. Even in the deepest of oceans, when we face confusion and fear, remember this: our God walks on water.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, we thank You that You are with us in every trial, tribulation, and storm we face in life. Thank You for going before us and being our rear guard. Give us an increase of knowledge, wisdom, and understanding to make the right choices that reflect Your heart in all things, and help us to be brave in leaving the outcome in Your hands. It’s in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
Action Step
Today, reflect on any decisions you’ve been hesitant to make. Surrender them to God, trusting that He will guide you through any storm. Step forward in faith, knowing that God is with you, and trust Him to work out the outcome.
